In an interview with Adnkronos International (AKI), Djafar Umar Thalib, the leader of the Laskar Jihad militia, said that Muchdi's arrest in connection with the death of a prominent rights activist "had no legal basis".
Reportedly, Laskar Jihad was set up by the Indonesian military intelligence service to do its dirty work.
Former Garuda Indonesia pilot Pollycarpus Priyanto was jailed for 20 years in January 2008 for poisoning Munir with arsenic during a journey on Garuda from Jakarta to Amsterdam via Singapore.
Garuda's ex-boss, Indra Setiawan, was also jailed for one year as an accessory for helping with the plot.
Muchdi worked for General Hendropriyono, who was spy chief at the time of the first Bali Bombing and at the time of Munir's death.
